72. EXTEND Starting formation - Double Pass Thru, Parallel Ocean Waves (1/2 Tag), any Tag (1/4 or 3/4) formation. all dancers release handholds (if necessary), step forward and form an ocean wave with the couple they are facing. If the Extend leaves dancers facing no one, they remain facing out. If the starting formation is
right-handed, dancers Extend to a right-handed formation; if the starting formation
is left-handed, dancers Extend to a left-handed formation. From a Double Pass
Thru formation, dancers Extend to a right-hand Quarter Tag formation. From a
Quarter Tag formation dancers Extend to parallel waves. From parallel waves,
dancers Extend to a 3/4 Tag formation, from a 3/4 Formation, dancers Extend to a
completed Double Pass Thru formation.
Personal Opinion: The call Extend means that all dancers move forward unless the
caller designates certain ones to Extend.
Teaching Procedure:
The most common staring formation to teach this call is a 1/4 Tag formation. But if
the caller starts from a Double Pass Thru formation, all the Extend formations can
be shown at one walk thru.
Therefore; have the Heads or Sides Star Thru. Now explain to them that Extend means that everyone takes a step (or sometimes two) ahead. Bring to their attention that this is a 1/4 Tag formation. Now tell them that they will Extend again by everyone taking a step ahead until they are shoulder to shoulder with another dancer. They should be reminded that they are now in a Wave. To Extend again every one will take a step ahead. Here the caller will want to emphasize that those in the center must step together in a wave. Tell those facing out that they are to stay there until the next call that will cause them to move. Bring to their attention that this is a 3/4 Tag formation. By Extending again everyone will take a step forward. Now since no one is facing another dancer they will not step to a Wave. This is a Completed Double Pass Thru formation. Have everyone California Twirl and repeat the above described procedure to let them see where they will be in the formations as Leaders and Trailers.
This such an easy call to teach and learn, the caller should be able to continue the teach of Left type formations during the same night. It is suggested that you have the Head Ladies Lead Dixie Style to an Ocean Wave.
Here the caller will need to explain that since the wave is a Left Handed Wave, when they Extend they must meet the other dancer with Left Shoulders. It is recommended that the caller continue the teach as above. Emphasize that the only difference between the two is that they must recognize what type of wave the center dancers are in - Left or Right.
