DAISY CHAIN:
From a Grand Right and Left position: This movement is a Grand right and Left moving up two persons then doing a Wrong Way Grand, pull by right hands, take left hands with the next and arm turn half way, go back one, right arm turn 1/2 with this dancer and pull by, grand left and right two dancers, with this dancer arm turn 1/2, go back one dancer, left arm turn 1/2. Usually the above movement is repeated four times ( go forward two dancers and back one dancer). NOTE: While a full Daisy Chain will result in original partners being together at the end, it is suggested that 1/2 Daisy Chain (which will leave dancers with their opposite) is much more likely to be accepted by the dancers because of the number of arm turns in a full Daisy Chain.
GRAND PROWL:
With head couples facing into set and side couples
back to back; everyone walks forward four steps to make a 1/4
turn on the fourth step, heads walk four steps to side position,
sides walk four steps to head position, each man takes the lady
beside him by her left hand with his right hand and turns her under,
thus changing places; heads go to the corner of the square and
sides to center where all make another 1/4 turn, heads going
to opposite head position and sides to opposite side position.
At this point the men again turn the lady under, changing sides,
heads then walk to the center and sides walk to the corner of
the square, all make another 1/4 turn, heads walking out to
side position, sides to head position where the men again turn
a lady under. Heads then walk to the corner of the square and
sides walk to the center. All make a 1/4 turn and walk forward
to meet partner at home position with the men turning the ladies
under to a squared position. Each time a man meets a lady on
the outside of the square he must turn her under using man's
right hand and lady's left hands.
Count your steps 1,2,3, then turn or turn her under on the fourth step.
GRAND SWEEP:
From a squared set; Heads Part; Flutterwheel, sweep 1/4, Pass Thru, Partner trade and Roll. Sides Part; Turn to face each other, back up four steps, turn to face head position, move up to head position and Do Sa Do the one you meet to Star Thru. Sides now in head positions do the heads part as the heads now at the side positions do the sides part y backing up. Repeat the above to end at home position.
GRAND SLIDE:
From a squared set: A grand Square movement that has
dancers facing the same way throughout the call. Heads Part: Walk
forward four steps, side step apart four steps, back up four steps
then side step together four steps. Sides Part: Side face, back up
four steps, side step together four steps, walk into the middle four
steps, then sidestep apart four steps. Now reverse the movement by
sliding apart first and then walking four steps etc. End at home position.
Grand Q:
Everyone faces their partner and does a Dosado - everyone does a Curlique
(you could do a touch a quarter instead) - Ladies Star Left Three-quarters -
Men move around the outside to their right one quarter - everyone meets
their original partner and does a dosado - curlique - Men star left
three-quarters - Ladies move around the outside one-quarter to meet original
partner - all of the previous is repeated to meet partner at home - I
personally add an extra dosado at the end.
GRAND BLOSSOM:
All walk to center and then back out raising hands, all do a partner trade, then cloverleaf (passing
Left Shoulders), moving on to the next position in the square. Repeat 3 more times to get back home.
(64 beats) - [taken from Set's In Order somewhere between '78 and '84)]
TRIANGLE GRAND SQUARE:
All face partners and back up 3 steps, turn 1/8 with corner go fwd 3 steps on the diagonal to the center,
Turn right 1/8 again, all back up 3 steps with original partner and on the fourth count face and back up
4 steps; Then ALL RETRACE STEPS till back home.
(32 beats) - [taken from Set's In Order somewhere between '78 and '84)]
GRAND SQUARE THE ROUTE:
Sides Face Grand Square The Route)
Sides Part --
Side Face and Grand Square 8 steps, Slide Thru, Star Right 1/2 then as a couple Sweep a Quarter
Heads Part --
Heads Star Right 1/2 then as a couple Sweep a Quarter, Face and Grand Square 8 steps, then Slide Thru
then reverse for 16 more beats [taken from Set's In Order somewhere between '78 and '84)]
GRAND TOUR:
Ladies Face Partner Back up 4, Face Right and walk forward 4, Face Left and walk forward 8 Face Left
Men walk forward 8, Face Right backup 4, Face Right walk forward 4 Face Left
repeat the entire sequence and all will be across the set with original partner.
(32 beats) [taken from Set's In Order somewhere between '78 and '84)]
RAINBOW STROLL:
From a squared set: Everyone takes partner and walks to the center of the set. Quarters out (turns their back to the partner) and walks out with corner dancer to original man’s left-hand position and California Twirls, walks into the center again quarters out, walks out to original opposite position, California Twirls, walks into center, takes corner to walk out and California Twirl in original right-hand position, walks into the center, quarters out, takes this dancer out to home position, and California Twirls. Ends in squared set.
NOTE:
While the definition states that dancers are to progress 1/4 around the square each time they walk out, in practical terms it has been found that most of the time they will only progress 1/8 around the square. This will leave them in a squared set BUT 1/2 across the set from their original starting position.
RIP N' SNORT:
From a circle that is usually moving, the couple designated goes down the center of the circle and through an arch made by the opposite couple, where the active couple drops inside hands to separate and pull others around to reform the circle. The arching couple will turn under their own arms to face in and the only hand hold that is dropped is the active couples' inside hands. This can be called from a circle of four and end in lines of four. The actives will move out to ends of those lines.
STAR THE ROUTE:
Those designated, heads or sides, from a squared set: Example: Heads star right 3/4, left-hand star a full turn with their right-hand couple, heads to the middle for a right-hand star 1/2 to left-hand star with their original left-hand couples a full turn to do as per call.
Venus and Mars:
Start with any thing that will get the dancers in a Star Promenade (man on inside with left hand). On command the #1 lady will lead to the right to start a separate right hand star. The ladies will follow in session leaving the men in their star. As the stars turn, the #1 couple will do a right hand pull by with a slight turn to put the man in the ladys' left hand star and the ladies in the mens' right hand star. Each couple will repeat the action in turn. (The caller can turn the stars as many times as desired) Upon command the star change will occur again putting the men back into the left hand star and the ladies in the right hand star. As they turn, the #1 man will pick up his partner (as do the other men) back to the original Star Promenade.
It can be done with right hand star with men on inside or ladies on inside. It's just a marrow of the other.
It's a fun movement for diversity, but one should be cautioned that it does take time to communicate the action desired.
BIRDIE IN THE CAGE:
From two or more couples circling clockwise: The birdie is the lady of the active couple and she steps into the center of the circle that moves around her. On the call “Birdie hop out, Crow hop in”: the active man goes to the center of the circle and the active woman return to the circle. Continue as per call.
DIP AND DIVE:
From a Promenade:
Designated couples Wheel Around and make an arch which the others Dive Thru. repeat. If one couple leads out to the right to face this couple, you have three couples in line and from this formation the centers arch as the outside couples duck under then California Twirl on the outside and dive as per call.
RED HOT:
From a promenade position or circle of eight: The man will pull the lady across in front of him in a left face turn with his left hand where she goes to the man behind her. Men will step up to right arm turn the lady he faces a half turn to pull by and walk up to partner for a full left arm turn, pull by and then go to their corner for a half right arm turn and pull by to move up to his partner and await the next command.
WAGON WHEEL:
From facing dancers (man and lady): Join right forearms and walk around each other clockwise exactly one full turn. The man will now give the lady a slight push into a right face spin once and a half and drift slightly counterclock-wise so as to keep beside the man that spun them. As soon as the ladies begin their spin, the men will make a left hand star. Coming out of the spin, the ladies place their left forearm through the man’s right forearm, i.e. between his forearm and his body. (Man’s right forearm should be hanging straight down with his right wrist resting on his belt.) The star now moves forward (counterclockwise). On the command HUBS BACK OUT AND THE RIM TURN IN, the ladies, keeping their left arm in place, put their right hand in the man’s right hand. The men now back up in place a full 360 degree turn, the ladies walking forward. When the turn is completed, the ladies will drop left arms from the man but continue to hold right hands and fold in front of the man. End with man facing counterclockwise, ladies clockwise, right hands joined. NOTE: Many callers will end the wagon wheel after the ladies do their 1 1/2 spin. This figure is known as “Wagon Wheel - Strip the Gears.”
BOX THE FLEA:
From facing dancers (man and lady): dancers step forward, join and then raise their LEFT hands. The lady steps forward and does a right face - turn back under the raised joined hands, as the man walks forward and around the lady while doing a right face U-Turn Back. Dancers end facing each other, each in the other’s starting position.
ICE COLD:
From a wrong way promenade: Men pull the ladies across and all go to your corner for a left turn thru, back to partner for a full right arm turn to pull by and to the right-hand lady for a left turn thru. End facing your partner.
ALLEMANDE WHEE:
From a Grand right and Left position: Pull by right and left, turn back three, pull by right, left, right and do as per call.
SUZY Q:
From two facing couples: Turn the opposite dancer with a right forearm half way and pull by, walk up to partner and left arm turn 1/2 and pull by, back to the opposite for a right arm turn 1/2 and pull by, then back to your partner for a Courtesy Turn to end in your exact starting position. The movement is a right turn thru with opposite, a left turn thru with partner, a right turn thru with opposite and a left to partner for a Courtesy Turn.
DIXIE CHAIN:
From two dancers in single file facing two dancers in single file: The lead dancers will pull by with right hands, everyone will pull by with left hands, trailing dancers will pull by with right hands to end in single file facing out. From couples facing: The person on the right will lead in a “Dixie Chain.”
CATCH ALL EIGHT:
From dancers side by side facing opposite directions: Right arm turn 1/2 moving clockwise, drop hands where everyone claps their own hands, then individually does a U-Turn Back turning towards each other to face the opposite way and then take left forearms to await the next command. A Catch All Eight usually starts with right hands, but can be left hands if the last hand of the preceding command was done with a right hand. It also can be Catch All Two, Four, etc., depending on number of couples in the set up.
CLOVER FLO
FROM A TRADE BY formation: Those facing out cloverleaf and then Pass Thru as those facing in Pass Thru, then Cloverleaf. Ends in an Eight Chain Thru position.
VENUS AND MARS
NOTE: there are several versions of how this call is done:
FROM A STAR PROMENADE formation: 1. Number one girl will peel to the right to start a Right hand Star.
Number two, then number three, then number four girl will join number one girl in the Right hand Star. The
men will continue in their Left hand Star. As the two stars turn, number one girl will "pick up" her partner
as will the other three girls to form a Right hand Star Promenade with all eight dancers.
Then number one man will peel to the left to form a Left hand Star with the other three men following him.
The girls will continue their Righ hand Star. Number one man will "pick up" his partner (as will the other
three men) to form a Left hand Star Promenade.
Number 2. As in the above it will start from a Star Promenade. The number one girl will peel to the right to start a Right hand Start with the other girls following. As the two Stars are turning, when number one man and girl
come side by side they will exchange stars. That is the man will move to the girls' star and the girl will move to where the men's star is. Number two man and girl will do the same as well as number three and four. This results in the men and women changing stars. As the stars continue turning, again number one man and number one
girl will trade stars. The other dancers will follow suite. Now the dancers are in their respected stars.
As the stars continue to turn, the man will "pick up" their partner in a Left hand Promenade like they started.
IMPORTANT: As the dancers trade stars, the girls will cross IN FRONT of the man.
This is some times called Cross Over Venus And Mars.
